Basilica Cistern

Istanbuls Water Reservoir
Yerebatan Cistern is an underground cistern located in the historical Sultanahmet district of Istanbul, built in 532 AD during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I.

The main purpose of Yerebatan Cistern was to meet the water needs of Istanbul, and it played a critical role in meeting the citys water needs, especially during droughts and sieges. The cistern is 140 meters long and 70 meters wide, covering a total area of 9,800 square meters. There are 336 marble columns inside the cistern. These columns are 9 meters high and each is a work of art. Most of the columns are in the Corinthian style, while some are in the Doric style.

One of the most striking features of the cistern is the two Medusa heads. These Medusa heads are found under two columns of the cistern and offer a very impressive view. The reason why the Medusa heads are here and what they are used for is still a mystery. Yerebatan Cistern is home to various concerts and cultural events due to its acoustics. Be prepared to take a journey into the depths of history while walking inside the cistern, which offers a unique experience to its visitors!
